Why call yourself SHARP?

In the mid 1990s, community health professionals recognised became aware that many older adults, in Hackney, were disconnected from their peers and community, inactive and generally fading away from public life. After commissioning a research, the respondents expressed the need for a place to learn, build friendships and to give back to the community. Thus, The Seniors Health & Active Retirement Project (SHARP) End was constituted in autumn 1995.

Roll on 27 years, and we continue to support adults over the age of 50 living in Hackney and adjoining boroughs.

Our objectives include:

  • prevention and reduction of disease.
  • identification and reduction of stress and the promotion of good mental health.
  • the combating of isolation and loneliness.
  • providing a resource to enable people to have fun.
  • supporting and empowering older people to improve the quality of their lives and specifically their health.
